| The
industrial overhead travelling cranes, gantry cranes and pendant
cranes are all designed to work on racks or beams above the work
area to move goods around by lifting transporting and settting
down. They can be controlled from a cab, by means of a pendant
hand controller on a cable or radio controlled. Industrial cranes
must not be confused with those used in civil engineering such
as tower cranes. Typically they will travel in two directions
and cover all of the work area, or a designated work area and
some are fixed on radial beams. Because of the nature of overhead
cranes having above ground access they are used in areas that
would not be accessible to forklift trucks or other wheeled vehicles.
Applications such as production lines, engineering, manufacturing,
car and steel plants use them in abundance where overhead but
not ground access is available.
Correct
training is vital for these seemingly simple lifting operations
for it is well documented that there are risks in lifting, carrying
and setting down loads within the workplace and overhead cranes
play an important part in the broader mechanical handling picture.
The Training Centre have been providing training, conversion
courses and certification for operators of overhead cranes for
many years now, with very successful pass rates. Our courses
accomodate all skill levels and provided you are above the legal
minimum age to operate an overhead crane, we will have a course
for you.
The areas offered in the overhead crane training course are:
Novice
Re-certification
Re-regulations

The
Trainee specification is defined by legislation for the individual
experience of the prospective operator and falls into two categories
and a ratio of 3:1:1 (3 trainees: 1 instructor: 1 truck) and these
are. Our one day 7.5 hour re-certification course for experienced
operators with documentary proof of previous overhead crane basic
training to an approved recognised standard and operate regularly
and carrying out pre-shift inspections or daily checks. Beginners
or novice operators will enjoy the new skills they will learn
on the Basic Novice Operator Course of two days 15 hours designed
for trainees aspiring to become operators of the overhead crane
and meet the high criteria and demands placed upon this important
workplace activity, by you, your employer, to safely and efficently
keep industry moving! High quality trained overhead crane operators
have an important role in the workplace.
The Training
Centre provides these only on-site. All of our training
programmes are conducted to the same high standards designed
to teach and prove the skills required to operate an overhead
crane safely and efficiently in accordance with general Health
& Safety Executive regulations, particularly LOLER and PUWER,
the guidlines in British Standards and given by The Lifting
Equipment and Engineers Association and to conduct the tests,
of theory, pre-shift inspections and practical driving required.
All course documentation, books and handouts are provided by
The Training Centre. Certificates and license are issued to
successful trainees. Company employees will then be issued with
an internal permit to operate overhead cranes by their employer.
